Pack 470 Pinewood Derby

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!

2025 Pinewood Derby will be held from 10am to 1pm at the Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, Newtown on Saturday, January 11th. In the event of adverse weather, the snow date is January 25th at the same location.

If you’ve never been to a Pinewood Derby before, be prepared to have some fun! At the derby, you can expect to:

• CHEER on your scout/s, den/s, and pack through the race 
• HAVE FUN taking lots of pictures, hearing lots of cheers, and seeing lots of smiles!

Details:

• Weigh-Ins: 10:00-10:45 (after 10:45 check-ins will not be guaranteed a race-time, so be early and make sure you have enough time to adjust your car if needed).
• Races: 11:00-1:00 (1st heat races will run starting with Tigers & ending with Webelos, but the 2nd through 4th heats will be done via the computer. Each heat should take about 20 minutes)
• Scouts should wear their Class A uniforms. Siblings & parents can show their support with Class B shirts/sweatshirts if available.
• Sibling/Parent Races: all siblings and/or parents who wish to race their cars may do so after the conclusion of the scout races, before awards. Bragging rights only (no awards given).
• Derby track setup will be the night before from 7-9ish. Parents attending setup & interested in the “Iron Derby” competition, please bring an unopened derby box and any non-powered hand tools you wish to have (some hand tools will be available for all to use).

Rules:

• Please follow the rules provided inside your pinewood derby box and the rules previously emailed to the Pack. 
• Take note of the rules regarding weight and size, as cars outside the parameters may not be allowed to race and will not be included in official results. 
• Absolutely NO loose weights. This will result in immediate disqualification and any issues found at check-in may result in the inability to race at all.
• Cars may not be excessively high. These cars tend to jump lanes & interfere with other cars, potentially causing damage.
• Once your car is checked in, no handling of the cars is permitted. Your car will be marked with the number in permanent marker on the underside (preventing stickers from falling off & sticking to the track).
• All graphite must be applied OUTSIDE the building. No exceptions!
• Only positive, encouraging words may be used to cheer on your scouts, friends, and den mates. 

Awards:

Every scout that participates in the derby will receive a rank specific derby patch. Additionally, there are 3 types of awards:

1. 3 Special Awards given to the most realistic car, fan favorite (1 ticket vote per child), and fastest den
2. 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place for each RANK (not den) (top 2 in each rank move on to regionals)
3. 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place overall (all of Pack 470)
